Your Energy Generation at the Mary Brogan Museum of Art and Science features a number of exhibits that allow patrions to learn about energy in a fun, interactive environment.
How do the choices we make every day affect how we use energy? One exhibit in Your Energy Generation examines this quesitons through the use of a giant "wind sock" as a visual for energy consumption. Patrions must choose from a selection of different appliances (for example, an air conditioner or a fan) and try to make the most energy efficient choices. The more appliances that are on, the more the sock deflates as a representation of the amount of energy consumped. However, if a patron chooses the correct items for energy efficiency, the sock “inflates” to its full height.
Initially inspired by the letter wall on the game show, “Wheel of Fortune,” the Energy Equilizer Kiosk mimics a large game of memory. Each window of the kiosk represents a different level of energy consumption. The goal is to correctly match equal items (for example, one incandescent bulb uses as much power as three fluorescent bulbs). A correct match is signaled by a spinning police light on top of the kiosk!
One of the primary themes of Your Energy Genration is that energy is all around us, taking many forms that we may not immediatley recognize. A ray of sunshine, a crashing wave, and a field of corn all contain energy that can be used to power the devices we use everyday.
The Sunstainability Sphere demonstrates how light can be used for power through the use of a "solar race track." Patrons can see how different intensities of light (demonstrated by selecting different cities in the United States) affect how fast the cars move around the track. There is also a setting to simulate nighttime, to demonstrate how batteries and capacitors are used to store energy.
These are just a few of the exhibits now on display at the Mary Brogan Museum of Art and Science. Your Energy Generations continues with numerous information panels, a wave tank that demostrates hydroelectricity, an exhibit on biomass, and more!
